October 2007 Archives

joe-reggie.jpgThis year, I decided to go as Reggie Jackson. I think I did a pretty good job. Although some of my friends were skeptical about the number of people in Los Angeles that would recognize me, I got a lot of comments when I went out on Saturday.

belichick_kraft.jpgAs I have mentioned numerous times, I really can't stand New England sports. Well, except for the Celtics. I am excited for the Cs because it looks like they at least appear to be trying in the personnel department, but Doc Rivers has me worried. But that's not what I want to talk about.

The real scourge of the earth, at lease when it comes to Boston sports, is the Patriots. Why? Because ever since they won the Super Bowl for the first time years ago, it has given the people of Boston hope that anything is possible. That followed by the Red Sox victory in the World Series means that everybody is jumping on the bandwagon, which is cool because that means there are fewer douchebags on the Yankees bandwagon, but I digress.

this-phos-for-you-los-angeles.jpgMy last gridskipper article was about pho, an awesome vietnamese noodle dish. My writeups amounted to little more than backhanded compliments on most of the venues, so I decided I would do a follow-up. More to follow!

I know that other people's have talked about it, but what is up with the My Two Dads impersonation on Heroes? I am still loving this season, but whenever I see Parkman and Mohinder in that apartment trying to take care of a this girl who is having nightmare about this killer, I just start laughing. I'm waiting for Florence Stanley to come in and fix everything. If NBC was smart, they would at least throw in a Dick Butkus cameo or something; that would be almost as good as seeing George Takei. My Two Dads was on NBC as well, so I am sure that this is all in the works, or at least it should be.

rome10-18.jpgIt's really too bad that HBO cancelled Rome. I loved the show even though, as a fan of Roman history, I should have loathed most of the liberties they took with the series such as Augustus the BDSM fan who had sex with his sister. However, there were a lot of parts that I loved, so I was not surprised when I had a Rome-inspired dream last night.

In the dream, I was walking along the Roman countryside and bumped into the two main charactures, Lucious Vorenus and Titus Pullo, just hanging out. We were walking around making jokes about Pompeii and the Trojan War, ambling through the countryside. It was all very pleasant until I suddenly found myself in the middle of some insane battle. Imagine the first scene of Saving Private Ryan crossed with 300 and you have an idea of what I was going through. I was never actually fighting, but just watching everything cut back and forth in the third person.

The battle didn't last long as I was able to shake myself awake, and when I fell back asleep I dreamed that I was running up the aisles of the Coliseum for exercise, which is better than fighting, but the whole thing would have been a lot easier if I was dreaming of Niobe (Indira Varma) or at least Gaia.

tyra-cycle-9.jpgSince I left TVgasm, I have watched a lot less television. One show I never thought I would give up is America's Next Top Model. I love Tyra, I love the show. However, I just haven't been able to get into Cycle 9. I watched the first episode, but haven't seen it since, and I am not going through withdrawal. It's blasphemy, I know. But it's also true. I still have those episodes on the Tivo, so I will get to them eventually, but at my own pace. Hopefully this won't affect Tyra when I ask her to marry me, but you know how fickle women can be.

In the meantime, I am powering through my Netflix queue at a more regular pace. Last two movies were Roll Bounce and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I saw the former with a few friends of mine in anticipation for a roller skating party (yes, I was on skates. no, there are no pictures. yes, I had fun) and the latter because it was featured in Veronica Mars. I actually liked Bow Wow and Chi McBride more than Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer.

boss_torre.jpgSo, the Yankees are out of the playoffs in the first round AGAIN! Since 1995, it has been pretty easy to be a Yankee fan. We go to the playoffs every year, and for a while there, we were winning about as many world series as they could throw at us. I hate to say it, but we had a dynasty.

Dodd31.jpgSorry about the lack of updates. I started a new job at UCLA at the end of September, so I have been too busy to update the blog. That being said, above is the picture of Dodd Hall, which I now call home from 8-5. I'm doing technical support in the School of Humanities and I am responsible for the Classics, Art History, Philosophy and Indo-European Studies departments. Now that I am a state employee, you can enjoy knowing that part of your California taxes go to pay me! That's a pretty good way to spend your money.
