The Dream Garage: Dead Presidents

1964_lincoln.jpg

I remember seeing the movie Dead Presidents when I was in high school. It was brutal and violent, but it did have a lasting impression on me for a couple of reasons. First, the soundtrack is AWESOME. Probably the most-played CD in my collection for at least a couple of years. The second was the bad ass car: a 1960s Lincoln Continental.

The Continental is probably famous to most people because JFK was shot while riding in one, but the first memorable moment for me was in the Isaac Hayes video of "Walk on By" that played at the beginning of the movie, and I have loved the car ever since. It made a very successful comeback in The Matrix as well. This car was absolutely made for the gangsta lean. The best part about this car is that it came in sedan and convertible form.

It's hard to pick, but I would take a convertible, probably one from 1964. Hopefully my memories of the movie (I only saw it once, I just loved the soundtrack) are correct and it was the Continental in the film, but even if it was a Cadillac or an Oldsmobile. The slab sided Lincoln is the one for me.

Totally agree. The 60s introduced a lot of great American cars with plenty of inherent badness.

I love that soundtrack too! I discovered Curtis Mayfield through that album. I realized that my Dad was a fan, and much to my mother's dismay, he introduced to me Pusherman, Superfly and all the other greats.

Yeah, I was really into that movie in middle school. My friends and I did the whole "white face" thing for Halloween. Is that offensive? If black face is, shouldn't white face?

jasmine,

Did you get the second soundtrack that they released? It was OK, but not like the original. "If You Want Me To Stay" is still one of my all-time favorites.

I didn't even realize they released a second one. I'll have it by Monday. To Amazon...

Mokers/J,

Don't forget that the boys from "Entourage" are rocking a classic Lincoln Continental convertible with the suicide doors in the title sequence.

I'm a sucker for 1960's Pontiacs. I had a '66 G.T.O. in high school, which made me way cool, and until recently I had a '69 Bonneville convertible which was an awesome cruising boat.

Fuck! That means I will have to wait at least ten years before driving one or people will think I am just trying to be an Entourage Poseur.
